For over a half century, scholars have questioned the constitutionality of the administrative state and have accurately predicted its dangers to republican government. But this legacy of the early Progressives has expanded beyond mere regulatory matters. In recent years, other powerful parts of the federal bureaucracy have become openly politicized and unrestrained by presidential or congressional authority. Much evidence suggests that what is known as America’s intel state, or the vast spying and data collection apparatus consisting of dozens of federal agencies, is an even great threat to constitutional government. This panel of experts will discuss prospects for reform.
