Judicial Interference, Violence and Malpractices in Mexican Elections

Sat, September 7, 8:00 to 9:30am, Marriott Philadelphia Downtown, 415

Session Submission Type: Full Paper Panel

Session Description

Although Mexican democracy is about to turn a quarter century old, it has not reached a degree of consolidation or high quality in its procedures and contents. One of the aspects that apparently had the greatest progress according to the various indicators were the electoral processes, this characteristic being the one that guided the transition process from the previous authoritarian regime to the current one. However, recent research shows that deficiencies have progressively increased in the last decade, to such an extent that Mexico is no longer considered a democratic regime and is considered a hybrid regime now as recorded by The Economist Unit in The Democracy Index 2023. The presentations of this panel analyze all these issues of the recent elections in Mexico, such as the interference of the Executive Branch on the Judicial Branch, the electoral malpractices seen from the judicial sentences of Mexican Electoral Court, and the violence committed by the candidates against their adversaries.
