Innovations in Democratic Theory
Thu, September 5, 4:00 to 5:30pm, Loews Philadelphia Hotel, Commonwealth BSession Submission Type: Created Panel
Session Description
The papers on this panel make novel contributions to democratic theory and democratic institutional design. Peisajovich uses deliberative democratic theory to construct a normative theory of leadership and Reinoso argues for a new interpretation of Hannah Pitkin's conception of political representation. Sass and Tanasoca outline a practice of mandate voting meant to enhance the normative implications of mandate claims, while Valsangiacomo develops a normative theory of liquid democracy that portrays it as uniquely maximizing popular sovereignty while balancing the need for representative structures.
