Session Submission Type: Created Panel
The papers on this panel make novel contributions to democratic theory and democratic institutional design. Peisajovich uses deliberative democratic theory to construct a normative theory of leadership and Reinoso argues for a new interpretation of Hannah Pitkin's conception of political representation. Sass and Tanasoca outline a practice of mandate voting meant to enhance the normative implications of mandate claims, while Valsangiacomo develops a normative theory of liquid democracy that portrays it as uniquely maximizing popular sovereignty while balancing the need for representative structures.
Directness and Popular Sovereignty in Liquid Democracy - Chiara Valsangiacomo, University College Dublin
Mandates that Matter: A (New) Democratic Innovation - JK Sass, Australian National University; Ana Tanasoca, Macquarie University
Speech and Leadership: The Actors of Mediated Deliberation - Nicole Peisajovich, Columbia University
Pitkin's Fifth View - Loren Reinoso, Yale University
