Session Submission Type: Created Panel
Over the past several years, there has been an increased focus in academia, the media, and political discourse on rising authoritarianism, creeping fascism, rightwing consolidation, and Christian nationalism in the United States. While far from being a new phenomena, these ultraconservative movements have gained new relevance and persons including Donald Trump, Javier Milei, Jair Bolsinaro, and Giorgia Meloni, among many others, gained political power. Events like the insurrection on January 6th, 2021, only intensified the focus on these phenomena. This panel assesses these dynamics through an analysis of global Trumpism; an exploration of Trump's racial discourse; an interrogation of "rightwing intersectionality" through a focus on Argentinian President Javier Milei; and an investigation of Christian Nationalism's political aims. Together, they shed new insight on the global reach of rightwing politics.
