Session Submission Type: Roundtable
Much of nationalism literature provides a sequential account of social development in which nationalist ideas, goals, and organizational forms supersede imperialism -- as modern states replace premodern empires.
Yet a more careful look at these processes reveals a different picture, one in which modern nationalism has coevolved with imperialism – in ways that have been consequential and understudied. This roundtable will discuss theoretical and empirical dimensions of the cohabitation of nationalism and imperialism in different regions of the world, from 19th Britain to 21st century Russia, contributing to a better understanding of issues of global significance.
