Italy is at the leading edge of the ongoing political transformation in Western democracies. It experienced Silvio Berlusconi long before Viktor Orban consolidated his position in Hungary or Donald Trump emerged in the United States. It developed new forms of populism in the Five Star Movement and saw the evolution of old forms of extremism in the National Alliance and the Brothers of Italy. Italian politics is a living laboratory for separatism, inequality, electoral systems design, and popular participation. These papers showcase some of what Italy can contribute to our understanding of modern politics.
Half of the Five Star: Characteristics of Those Abandoning the 5-Star Movement - Matthew Edward Bergman, Corvinus University of Budapest
Surveillance of Political Activists: Evidence from 100 Years of Italian Records - Gemma Dipoppa, Brown University
The Meloni Government in Comparative Perspective - Marco Improta, University of Siena; Francesco Marangoni, University of Bologna
