Session Submission Type: Full Paper Panel
Since the last decade, we have witnessed a multitude of movements and mobilizations around the world for democracy, social justice, economic stability, and environmental sustainability as the world grapples with multiple and overlapping crises. Globally, women are at the center of these movements, driving innovation and leveraging contentious politics to envision renewed democratic systems, political institutions, and concepts of inclusive citizenship. This panel will map and explore the varying dynamics of gendered mobilization in the global south, examining strategic innovations, transnational influences, and intersecting interests in different parts of the world—from Mexico to Nepal to Colombia to India. As popular movements bring attention to deficiencies in our dominant political and social systems, we aim to document how women-led movements influence and co-create new social, cultural, and political dynamics within their societies. The panel will discuss and comprehend the differences and commonalities in women's mobilization in the 21st Century and how they are reshaping notions of citizenship, democracy, feminism, and activism.
