¡Mi Gente Latino!: Spanish-Language Appeals and Latino Voter Engagement

Sat, September 7, 10:00am to 12:00pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center (PCC), Hall A (iPosters)

Abstract

This poster examines how Spanish-language appeals influence Latino constituents’ perceptions of their representatives’ responsiveness and commitment. Building on existing research that highlights the role of language in political engagement, this study investigates whether non-Latino political elites can effectively use Spanish-language translations to foster a sense of belonging and inclusivity among Latino voters. The theoretical framework suggests that Spanish-language appeals are key to enhancing political knowledge and building trust within the Latino community. Through a survey data analysis, I found that Spanish-language translations on political websites significantly improve Latino constituents’ perceptions that their representatives are attentive to, understand, and address their needs. These findings underscore the importance of linguistic inclusivity in addressing representation gaps and demonstrate how language-based appeals can enhance democratic engagement among historically marginalized populations.
