This study examines the causes of different types of campaign violence in Mexico. During the past three electoral cycles criminal violence against politicians and public officials have dominated the news and academic debates. We find however that an alarming number of violent incidents are carried out by candidates against other candidates for the same elected office. We use an original database to test differences between these two kinds of violence.
