How will democracies navigate the challenges posed by the influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on power dynamics, norms, and collaboration? Through the lens of Neoclassical Realism, this study examines the most likely shifts in power dynamics with which states will grapple with as a result of this emerging technology. How can states navigate uncharted waters as technological, economic, military, and socio-political factors continue their advance into the AI era? By enlisting support from constructivist perspectives, the paper also considers the technology’s influence on liberal democratic states’ norms and security cooperation, while also considering collaborative democratic approaches and the potential uses and management of AI. The promise of AI’s powerful tools to navigate complex global challenges suggests a reimagined potential for new collaborative frameworks for a swiftly evolving world. How will democracies employ diplomatic negotiations, address economic interdependence, and engage international institutions in this new age? In essence, this paper addresses urgent queries regarding liberal democracy in the AI era and aims to provoke reflective considerations on the reconfiguration of power, the evolution of security norms, and the reimagination of collaborative approaches that will redefine the future of international relations. It is comprehensive exploration of the multifaceted landscape where liberal democracy and artificial intelligence intersect, urging scholars and policymakers to contemplate the future contours of international security.
