This study examines the relationship between neoliberal rationality and populist attitudes. Utilizing a survey experiment with 2,146 U.S. participants, it found a significant positive correlation between neoliberal rationality and populist attitudes. A further survey was conducted among 1,012 Turkish citizens, funded by the NSF. The results from Turkey mirrored those from the U.S., showing a similar inclination of individuals with strong neoliberal beliefs towards populism. In both countries, the effect of neoliberal rationality on populism was mediated through collective narcissism, ethnonationalism, and conspiratorial thinking. These findings indicate that populism is not just a reactionary phenomenon but is also intricately linked to neoliberalism, suggesting a complex, intertwined relationship between these ideologies.
