Examining Refugee Rentierism: Its Influence on German Politics and EU Ties

Sat, September 7, 4:00 to 5:30pm, Marriott Philadelphia Downtown, Salon D

Abstract

The refugee rentier-seeking behavior of Turkey and Belarus in negotiations with the European Union has become one of the primary policy concerns in Europe. The evolutionary challenges of migration inflows and inter-state political bargains also affect major EU nations' domestic politics. This study focuses on the intricate effects of refugee rentiers’ actions on Germany's domestic political dynamics. The research methodologically combines qualitative analyses of Turkey and Belarus's refugee and migration policies, their deal with the EU, and the changing nature of German policies on migration, political speeches, and media narratives with quantitative assessments of migration statistics and public opinion trends. This dual approach facilitates a holistic understanding of the internal and external factors shaping Germany's political landscape in the context of Refugee rentierism. Findings indicate that the leveraging of refugee flows by Turkey and Belarus has significantly impacted German domestic politics, particularly in areas of immigration policy, border security, and foreign affairs. This influence is evidenced by increased political polarization within Germany, where debates over migration and EU foreign policy have become more contentious. Besides, the study sheds light on the German government's struggle to maintain a delicate balance between its humanitarian responsibilities, the expectations of its populace, and the pressures of international diplomacy. This balance is crucial for Germany's role in the EU and its influence on the integrity of the Schengen Area. Besides, this research underscores the imperative for Germany and the EU to develop nuanced and unified strategies to counteract the challenges of Refugee renterism.
