Human Subjects and the IRB as a Tool for Teaching Qualitative Research Methods

Sat, September 7, 10:00 to 11:30am, Marriott Philadelphia Downtown, Salon L

Abstract

The discipline’s preference for quantitative research often means Human Subjects testing and the Institutional Review Board are items mentioned in passing during graduate level methods courses. Human subjects, however, are at the heart of political science, regardless of the methodology one uses. This paper discusses how both the Institutional Review Board and IRB Protocols can be used to introduce qualitative methodology in the undergraduate classroom, from topic generation to presentation of research findings.
