The MCU Closet May Be Opening a Bit

Fri, September 6, 4:00 to 5:30pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center (PCC), 104B

Abstract

As the Marvel Cinematic Universe transitioned from Phase 3 to Phase 4, fans had high hopes for better and more authentic queer representation in the Marvel Universe. Productions from the first three phases missed several opportunities to include queer narratives and often made choices that reinforced negative queer stereotypes. Early rumors and official MCU announcements indicated Phase 4 productions would be different and queer characters would finally fully join the MCU. In this chapter I analyze the degree to which the promise of Phase 4 materialized (or not) in terms of authentic queer representation in the MCU as well as some of the forces supporting and resisting a more inclusive Marvel Universe.
