This paper critically examines the intricate relationship between religious movements and political dynamics in Turkey, with an emphasis on the 2023 electoral landscape. It explores the paradoxical utilization of Sunni theological discourse by religious communities, which is employed to either endorse or challenge President Erdogan's leadership. The study employs political discourse analysis, scrutinizing a myriad of sources: official statements from religious communities, social media posts from their representatives and members, as well as leadership speeches available on YouTube and television channels. The investigation reveals the versatility of religious narratives in buttressing various political stances. The richness of religious texts, such as prophetic hadiths, Quranic verses, writings of the past scholars and historic fatwas, provides a vast repository from which supporters and opponents of any political ideology can draw. This analysis illuminates the way religious discourse is strategically employed to further distinct political agendas and interests. Moreover, the findings of this study extend beyond the realm of Turkish electoral politics. They offer critical insights into the broader implications of religious political discourse, highlighting its potential to influence and shape diverse political choices across various contexts.
