The impartial delineation of district boundaries––also known as redistricting––remains an ongoing challenge to practitioners. This paper defines electoral boundary delimitation and the key concepts related to its implementation. It situates the role of redistricting within different electoral systems––majoritarian and mixed-member; describes the overarching characteristics governing the process; and describes potential pitfalls (e.g., the political manipulation of boundaries or the exclusion of minority groups). The paper aims to analyze the relationship between redistricting and electoral integrity. It characterizes the role played by the various actors in drawing boundaries and the most common methods and criteria used in the process. It identifies how redistricting can undermine electoral integrity and which mechanisms can aid in making this process more accountable and transparent. Finally, the paper concludes by delineating some of the most relevant open questions for scholars and offering policy recommendations for the community of practitioners involved in implementing this process around the Globe.
