Survey data indicate that Japanese citizens' levels of satisfaction with democracy are declining. While some contend that this is due to the prolonged economic stagnation, I argue that it is caused by the lack of competition in politics since the LDP's return to power in 2012. I demonstrate that a growing number of citizens, especially among the highly educated, are disillusioned by the country's party politics and intensely dislike the ruling party without supporting any other party.
