Session Submission Type: Meeting
An “unconference” session prioritizes participant voices. In this session, the group will decide what topics will be discussed, what questions will be explored, and what information or help is needed.
At the beginning of the session, two moderators will
Share ground rules, particularly surrounding the use of inclusive and respectful language. Additionally, the moderators will give the participants a moment to add to these ground rules.
The topics explored may be sensitive and may evoke emotions. Certainly, the discussions will give rise to a range of opinions. It might be worth taking a moment to review resources on “disagreeing well” so that all participants are ready to foster constructive conversations and find common ground in the face of contrasting thoughts on the topic. https://www.ucl.ac.uk/about/disagreeing-well/resources
Encourage participants to brainstorm discussion topics, based on the participants’ interest and expertise. Please know that:
Moderators may adjust language of brainstormed ideas to make phrasing more inclusive or to combine similar ideas
The discussion(s):
Once the group has collaboratively determined topics for discussion, the participants will select breakout rooms to join based on their interest in the proposed topics
The person who suggested the topic will have first standing to act as moderator. If the person does not wish to serve as moderator, they can ask someone else in the room to do this.
Another individual should volunteer as recorder and reporter
Participants are encouraged to respectfully share experiences. The goal is to encourage conversation, not planned presentation.
If you are in a breakout room that is not meeting your needs, we encourage you to move on to another space that may be better suited to your interests.
The conclusion:
Participants will return to the main session space to summarize their discussions and note any take-aways.
