Session Submission Type: Panel Session
The papers in this panel look at three specific forms of devotion within Hasidism. Dael Rodrigues Garcia revisits Nachman of Breslov's "Tale of a Rabbi and an Only Son" within a literary context to argue that it belongs fully within the oeuvre of Nachman's imaginative tales and to reveal the subversive theology that it teaches to its reader. Hava Vannikov-Shmulevich analyzes the Kaliver Hasidic song "Szól a kakas már," sung in Hungarian, within the context of the kabbalistic concepts of concealment and yichudim to reveal new layers of meaning in its use of a foreign language. Naftali Loewenthal investigates the uses and understandings of traditional teachings on contemplation in prayer within contemporary Habad society.
