Session Submission Type: Performance/Scholarship
We would like to take advantage of the performance/scholarship space in this division to have conversations about Jewish Latin American film, specifically Jewish Argentina film, with a well-known filmmaker: Gabriel Lichtmann. He has been working in the film industry all his life and is now working on his fourth feature-length film. His films are all situated in Jewish universes, and while he admits to finding inspiration in American filmmakers such as Woody Allen and Billy Wilder, as well as literary geniuses from his country, such as Jorge Luis Borges, he also feels the need to delve deep to understand his fascination with twentieth century Jewish American culture. We will have the chance to watch key scenes of his movies before starting the conversations about identity, memory, and the essence of his films. This is a unique opportunity to talk with the artist, as well as with acclaimed scholars in the field of Latin American Jewish film—these scholars bring their unique perspective from Latin America, Europe, and the US. We hope this diverse and interdisciplinary panel will show the uniqueness of this AJS conference, open to different languages and a virtual format. Sincerely thanks from all members of this panel.
