This paper thoroughly examines the phenomenon of Zar spirit possession among Zar Masters who have immigrated from Ethiopia to Israel, providing a nuanced exploration of its socio-political dimensions through a critical social constructivist lens. It illuminates the discursive practices and power dynamics at play by delving into the intricate dynamics of social construction and negotiation surrounding Zar across diverse cultural, social, and political landscapes. Through in-depth interviews with Zar Master individuals, the study uncovers their resistance to hegemonic structures, challenges to racialized power systems, disruption of gender norms, and negotiation of identity within intersecting social categories. By emphasizing Zar's involvement in politics and employment, the research underscores its existential character and its role in traversing boundaries of ethnicity, class, and gender. Additionally, by spotlighting narratives of universality and public visibility among Zar Masters, the study reveals the broader implications of Zar within contemporary society, enriching critical discourse on identity, power, and resistance.
