In the field of Jewish Music there are limited resources for research as compared to other fields. The primary goal of the project is to build a discography in order to access information on Jewish recorded music and to analyze this date to ask new questions about Jewish Music in America. Following other studies of sound and recordings we want to see how recordings shape our understanding of Jewish Music. There are other related Jewish Music activities such as the printing of sheet music and performances. Our Project goal is to find trends of recorded music and then investigate other connections.
This presentation will outline the primary questions of the project: 1) How can we characterize recorded Jewish Music in America through Digital Humanities? 2) What does this tell us about American Jewish Culture? 3) What indicators are prevalent over time in Jewish Music? Genres? Styles? Performers? 4) Is recorded Jewish Music a reflection of practice or shaping behavior?
