Mapping musical pathways: A viewpoint of Seventeenth century Europe

Thu, December 19, 1:30 to 3:00pm EST (1:30 to 3:00pm EST), Virtual Zoom Room 09

Abstract

Mapping musical pathways is a way to effectively present geographic, temporal, and social proximities affording a new perspective on cross-cultural musical influences in Jewish contexts in early modernity. In this short report, I shall show how visualizing one melody's appearances as a contrafact for different piyyutim in the 17th century on an interactive map can be insightful as to its prevalence and may even help uncover non-Jewish equivalents.
