Gross’s work exemplifies the novel perspectives and arguments that can be produced by scholars who approach a conventionally text-based field with the armamentarium of a historian. Others may wonder whether such a set of approaches yields a richer and more compelling textual hermeneutics, but there is also room to consider the implications of the Jews’ divergent experiences in different sorts of political regimes.
