Between 1967 and 1977, Israel experienced an unprecedented wave of cultural and political protest, reflecting global trends and local issues associated with the declining influence of the labor movement in Israeli society. These protests also had an impact on the political activism of high school students, who, for the first time in Israel, organized direct and collective protest against government policies on foreign affairs, security, and society. This paper focuses on the response of urban youth, members of Israel’s social and economic elite who were expected to become future leaders and were at the center of Israel’s social and public consciousness.
The paper examines attempts at political organization by youth, outside the institutional frameworks of youth movements and schools and the extent of their influence on public discourse.
