Rabbi David Kimhi's well-known explanation of the phenomenon of KETIV and QERE in the Bible sees the two linguistic forms as alternative versions. In his opinion, these developed following the Babylonian exile and because of the difficulties faced in the process of transmitting the text of the Bible.
However, this lecture will show that Kimhi's interpretation of the KETIV and QERE does not always coincide with the historical picture he describes. Throughout his commentary on the Early Prophets, one can discern explanations reflecting a literary comprehension according to which the two versions serve together in order to express an ambiguous statement of Scripture.
